Last Call! And an infographic. Because why not?

No joke, last night my 12 Non-Toy Gift Ideas post from back in April got over 200 pageviews in about an hour. That's just adding to my excitement for my Non-Toy Gift Giveaway starting November 2! (Shameless plug, I know. Whatever. I'm excited!)

So far, there will be EIGHT different Non-Toy Christmas Gift Giveaways featured on my blog! Eek! If you just randomly happened by this blog because you heard there was free cake or something (there's not, but wouldn't that be nice?) then please follow my blog or like my Facebook page so that you don't miss out on the upcoming goodies! And if you're a seller/crafter who sells awesome non-toy gifts for kids and you want to get in on the giveaway action, now's your last chance! The deadline for being a part of the giveaway is October 31. (If you're a seller, I mean. If you just want to enter the giveaways, you've got plenty of time because they haven't even started yet.) I know I have a few maybes floating around out there, so if you've decided you want to participate (or if you have more questions,) email me at bejaneum(at)gmail(dot)com.

And this has nothing to do with anything, but I got an email from someone from Shutterfly asking if I'd be interested in sharing an infographic about a baby's digital footprint from birth to their first birthday on my blog. I've been mostly saying no to requests to putting things on my blog (since I have my awesome giveaways coming up! Just a reminder...) but I thought this one was kind of interesting. So, you know, look or don't look. It's up to you. I'm not getting any money or anything from this.

My extremely sophisticated homemade toys - part 3

Ok, so none of these three are really "toys," per se. But I had already started the series with the name "extremely sophisticated homemade toys," and I didn't want to change it to "random things you might have lying around your house that your toddler can play with," even though that's really a more accurate description. So, you know... sorry if the title makes you angry. Check out parts one and two here.

A Toddler Wallet
I've been using a wallet for about a year and a half that I really liked, storage-wise, but I decided after I got it that I wasn't crazy about the color. Also, I once stuck a name tag on it and then it wouldn't come off all the way. And then I spilled coffee on it. I'm very sophisticated and classy.

The wallet was from thirty-one, and I was just waiting for someone else to throw a thirty-one party so I could order another one, but no one was having one. So then one day Dan, Lucas and I were taking a walk, and we passed a house with a sign by the door that said, "Welcome to my Thirty-One Open House!" And I went up and knocked on the door and said (to a complete stranger,) "Um, hi! Can I order a wallet?" Because apparently that's the kind of thing I do.

So then I had this extra wallet that was still in perfectly good condition (minus the sticker and coffee stain, of course,) and I didn't want it to go to waste. I filled it with used gift cards, those fake credit cards you sometimes get in the mail when they want you to apply for a real credit card (why do they send those? Is it so you can see if the credit card would look good your wallet before you commit to getting one?) card-like coupons that expired before I remembered to use them, pictures I cut off of cereal boxes, popsicle sticks, and other randomness. And then I gave it to Lucas.

Pulling stuff out of (and putting stuff into) things is very interesting when you're a toddler, so he LOVES this "toy." I periodically add random surprises (pictures, cheerios, some seashells) into the zippered pockets so that he finds them when he is able to get the zippers open. (Just don't put anything that could be a choking hazard into it unless you plan to watch your child the whole time he/she is playing.) I had actually seen an idea for older kids using an old wallet as a crayon and coloring-paper carrier for restaurants and waiting rooms, so I just adapted it for a toddler.

Kind of Lazy Sensory Bin #1
Before joining Pinterest, I had never even heard of a sensory bin. But they're all the rage on Pinterest. (Click here for more examples than you could ever want.) The basic point is that you put a bunch of stuff into a bin of some sort and then let your toddler play with it. A lot of the ones I found online had themes to them, but the theme of the first one I made was pretty much "These are Random Things I Found in My House." I found some plastic containers the size of shoe boxes for ridiculously cheap at Target (I think?), so I bought a few and then... filled them with stuff. My first sensory bin had paper Easter grass (I do not recall when or why I bought said Easter grass, but it's been in my closet for years,) popsicle sticks, and straws I had leftover from one of my previous extremely sophisticated toys.

I realize this seems like an incredibly lame "toy," but I swear Lucas loves it. I keep it in a closet so that he can't spread paper Easter grass all over creation every day, and I pull it out only when the other toys aren't cutting it.

Kind of Lazy Sensory Bin #2 - Nature-themed-ish
After Lucas really liked my half-hearted, randomly just thrown together sensory bin, I decided to be ambitious and make another sensory bin that actually kind of had a theme. Enter the vaguely nature-themed bean bin.

Dried lentils, dried some-other-kind of bean, seashells and pine cones
In case you hadn't already figured this out, the lentils and beans get EVERYWHERE. Lucas was about 16-ish months old when I gave it to him, and he thought the best part was picking up handfuls of beans and throwing them on the floor (even though I had given him a shovel for scooping.) So I put the whole thing (and Lucas) inside a gigantic cardboard box (the other half of the box I put him in for finger painting.)

The beans still got all over, even with the giant box, but the mess was ever-so-slightly more contained. He periodically put lentils in his mouth but then would spit them back out (mostly.) But at least it was something that was theoretically edible instead of sand or something gross. I gave him a second bin in an attempt to get him to transfer the beans from one bin to the other instead of from one bin to the entire rest of our house, with limited success.

So, there you have it. My child plays with random assorted junk and beans. Because I'm sophisticated. Obviously.

If you click here, maybe I'll become famous. But probably for a different reason.

3:00am conversations with a one year old

Lucas has a cold. He sounds all congested, and last night he slept really, really horribly. The longest stretch he slept all night was about an hour and a half. Which of course means that the longest stretch I slept was about an hour and twenty-five minutes... give or take. I lost count of how many times he woke up, but it was definitely more than six... as evidenced by the whiny text messages I kept sending to Dan throughout the night (Dan was working a night shift.)

I am no stranger to being up with him in the middle of the night, but it's been months since I've had to get up with him, so this was the first night we've been awake together where he could actually talk. And man, did he talk! He speaks really clearly for a 20-month old, and he started talking early and knows a lot of words for his age. But he's still only 20 months old. So since he doesn't know a ton of words, he just says the ones he knows over and over and over and over. When I wasn't feeling super cranky from exhaustion, I actually kind of loved our middle-of-the-night talks in the rocking chair last night.

Our conversations went like this:

"Rocking. Rocking. Mama. Mama. Mama?"
"Yes, Lucas."
"I ya you." (I love you. - Cue me melting into a puddle.)
"I love you too, baby."
"Mama. Mama. Rocking. Mama. Dada. Dada?"
"Dada's at work."
"Yeah. Dada. Work. Work. Run? Running?"
"No, Dada's not running. Dada's at work."
"Yeah. Work. Dada...." (long pause) "Cow. Cow. Cow. Cow?"
"What does a cow say?"
"Boooo. Funny!"
At which point, I burst out laughing, of course.

Because he kept waking up, I thought it might help if I let him sleep in bed with me, and man, was that a terrible idea. He slept for 45 minutes and then woke up at 4:30 am incredibly excited that he got to hang out with his mommy in the middle of the night. So neither of us slept until I finally took him back to his own bed, where he slept for an hour and a half and then woke up for the day around 6am. (He usually sleeps until at least 8:15.)

So, I'm exhausted today, and while Lucas napped, I had a chiropractic appointment for my butt issues, so I didn't even get to nap. This little man is totally worth the exhaustion, but I'm really hoping we both get some more sleep tonight!

He seriously doesn't look at all sick, does he?
Don't let the smile fool you. He's kind of a disaster today.

Bathroom makeover-ish

We moved into our house in July of 2012, and there are still about a million little projects we'd like to do to make it a little more "ours." I'm sure at least 75% of them will never actually get done, but we're plodding along slowly. I swore that the hideous 90's wallpaper in the master bath and the bathroom next to Lucas's room would be the first two things to go, but it's been 15 months, and... those two bathrooms are still a few decades behind the times. And this post isn't even about them. Because apparently removing wallpaper is very annoying. And we haven't yet gotten up the energy to find that out for ourselves.

Anyway... we have a half bathroom on our first floor, and it's the bathroom our guests usually use. It's painted a chocolate-y brown (the same color that our library used to be painted.) I wouldn't have picked the color myself (I'm all about bright colors), but it's not a bad color. Dan has already repainted the upstairs bathroom in a light blue (it had been sponge-painted a mustard yellow color), and we had planned to do the half bath in the same color, but it seemed like a lot of work... for Dan, not for me. So I decided to just embrace the brown, but it needed something, because for the past 15 months, it has looked like this:

So, basically... we had added nothing to the bathroom but hand soap and lotion (and the garbage I didn't empty out of the can for the picture.) In 15 months. Charming, right? Every time I went to a garage sale, I kept an eye out for a picture or something to hang in the bathroom, but as I mentioned in this post, most of my artistic "eye" is just me knowing which things I don't want to hang in my house. Then I got the bright idea of buying a bunch of matching picture frames and hanging up pictures of our friends on those blank brown walls, but I couldn't decide on a color (and picture frames are abnormally expensive.) Enter Target clearance.

I went to Target a few weeks ago, and their back-to-school dorm room stuff was all on clearance. I found packs of four 4x6 teal frames on clearance for $4.18, so I bought seven packs of them and one pack of three 5x7 frames. In their garden and outdoor clearance, they had a metal lantern in the exact same color as the frames for $4.58 (I think), so I bought that, too.

After that, I decided I needed some friendship quotes to put with the pictures. While I was searching, I found this Etsy shop that had printable quotes from the musical "Wicked." Dan surprised me with tickets to the show in September, so I've kind of been on a "Wicked" kick. The Etsy seller had a cute design with the quote "Because I knew you, I have been changed for good," so I asked her to change the colors of it to match my bathroom and frames. I also asked her to design two other quotes to match it. (You can buy them here, here, and here. Then we can have twin bathrooms. But don't use pictures of my friends. That's just weird.)

Mine don't have the watermarks on them... obviously.

I traced the frames onto paper and then played around with arranging them so that I wouldn't have to hammer forty million holes in the wall before I found an arrangement I liked.
Think Panera will pay me for advertising its bags? No, I guess not.
And then I hung the pictures! Hanging pictures is kind of annoying, especially when you don't feel like using a ruler or a level... But I was pretty happy with the results!

It was really hard to photograph these frames because they kept reflecting off of the walls.

And now our bathroom doesn't look like it's part of an empty house! Tra la!

And that's all I have to say about that.

I have the holiday blues, and it's only October...

I love, love, love Christmas. I could listen to Christmas carols starting in July. I once begged Dan to let me leave our (artificial) Christmas tree up until June. (In a surprising turn of events, he said yes. But I chickened out sometime in mid-February.) Dan and I got married right before Christmas almost seven years ago, which gave me yet another reason to love my favorite holiday ever.

This picture is only kind of related to this post, but it is fabulous.
I stock up on Christmas ornaments everywhere we go, and I may have gone ever-so-slightly overboard with Lucas's gifts for his first Christmas last year.

In my defense, I'm pretty sure everyone needs a gigantic stuffed hedgehog for Christmas.
So it's kind of an understatement to say that I start looking forward to Christmas ridiculously early. Like, starting December 26. But... we just got Dan's work schedule for December, and he works five twelve-hour shifts in the days surrounding Christmas and on Christmas Day. Whomp whomp.

Dan likes being an ER doctor, and I'm ridiculously proud of him, but the whole "your place of employment literally never closes, ever, not even once, for any reason whatsoever" thing is not my favorite. So my choices are to spend Christmas at home with no family within a few hundred miles and only see Dan after Lucas has gone to bed or fly to visit family (With a toddler. By myself.) and not see Dan on Christmas at all. And frankly, I kind of hate both choices! Do you think that I could get the hospital to close the ER if I got enough people to sign a petition promising not to have any emergencies? As a backup plan, maybe I'll bring our Christmas tree and gifts to the emergency room and have Dan open presents with us in between patients. I really don't see how the hospital could object to that.

If you vote for me here, your Christmas wish will come true.
Assuming of course that your Christmas wish is that my husband will have to work.
Which honestly is kind of a mean wish.

Coming soon - More Non-Toy Gifts for Kids!

Back in April, I wrote a blog post of 12 Non-Toy Gift Ideas for Kids. It's my second most-visited post on this blog (and because I don't want the curiosity to kill you, the number one most-visited post is part one of my "Extremely Sophisticated Homemade Toys.") This month, it suddenly started getting a bunch more pageviews. So apparently people are really looking for great gifts that aren't toys. "Great" being the key word, of course. Because no one wants to be in the situation where you ask the mom of a niece, nephew or grandchild what you should get them for Christmas, and they say "Anything but toys! He has too many!" so you don't buy them any toys, and then when the child opens his gifts, everybody else ignored the "no toys" rule and bought awesome things like a talking robot with real laser action, and you're the weirdo aunt who bought them plain white gym socks. Awkward!

Anyway, my non-toy gifts post was getting a lot of action, so I figured that it was time for another one. And then I thought it would be even better if people could have a chance to win some free non-toy gifts for the kids in their lives. (Obviously!) So I searched around the internet for some great Christmas gifts that aren't toys, and then I asked the people who made and/or sold those gifts if they'd be willing to give people a chance to win one of those gifts for free. And... several of them said yes!

So starting in November, right here on this very blog, you're going to have a chance to win some great non-toy gifts for your kids! (Or somebody else's kids. I'm not picky.) And if you have an Etsy shop, or a website, or a product Facebook page (or, I don't know, a shed in your backyard that you use to sell stuff) that sells great non-toy gifts for kids, and you want to get in on the giveaway action and get some extra exposure for your business, send me an email at bejaneum(at)gmail(dot)com for more information! (Quick details: You'd send me two of your awesome non-toy gifts. One for Lucas to drool on test, and one to be used as a product giveaway. Your Etsy shop/website/Facebook page/shed would be featured in at least two blog posts. Want more details? Just ask.)

And for no particular reason (other than that I'm going through old pictures and that it's apparently National Baby Wearing Month, which I guess are both valid reasons, so you can just ignore the first part of this sentence, which I should've just deleted but didn't), here is a picture of my little family in Florida when Lucas was 11 months old:

Here's what's going on in my life. How about you?

Remember how I said that I was supposed to get two MRIs today?

Whomp whomp. (But let's all take a minute to appreciate the superb editing job I did in getting rid of my last name from that Facebook post.)

In other news, I was nominated as a Top 25 Family Blogger at Circle of Moms (I'm not entirely sure what that means yet, but I hope it comes with a parade.) So if you want me to win, you can click the pleasant little circle below and then click the little heart that says "vote" by my name.

You can vote for me once every 24 hours through October 31, and if I win, I'll ask the parade to go by your house as a thank you. (Assuming there is a parade. But there's gotta be one, right??) So, you know... please and thank you!

Annnndddd.... I should have some news soon about a way that you guys can all win some awesome free stuff (I mean, not all of you. Just some of you. Sorry. Hold your applause.) But I'm waiting until I'm really sure.

So, what's new with you?

Like me, like me!

So, if you like my blog, you can now "like" it on Facebook, too! Last night I finally got around to creating a Facebook page for my blog, and it was ridiculously easy and made me feel dumb for not doing it sooner. But anyway. If you like my blog and have Facebook, click here and then hit the like button to like it on Facebook. (And if you don't like it, why are you torturing yourself by reading it? That's just silly.) After you "like" the page, hover your mouse over the "liked" button, click "settings," and then click "all updates" if you want to read every witticism that pours from my fingers. (Or, you know, weird things I periodically think of.)

In other news, here is a picture of Lucas hugging a giant stuffed lion.

Footie pajamas are the new black

Tonight is a "lay on the couch and eat chocolate while watching reruns of Project Runway" kind of night. I've been dealing with some major pain for a while now that seems to be located in my right gluteal nerve. In other words, it's a literal pain in my butt. (Which is so fun to explain to people, by the way. "Why can't I hang out today? Well, um... my butt hurts." "Why is my physician recommending physical therapy, nice scheduling lady? Um. My butt hurts.") I have a second (and I think third?) MRI scheduled for Thursday, so if everyone could say a quick prayer that my pain can be diagnosed and treated, that would be extra appreciated. Please and thank you!

So if you've been wondering why I haven't posted any funny Lucas stories lately (and I'm sure that approximately zero of you were,) it's because I spend a lot of time laying on the floor while trying to entertain a toddler. It's definitely interesting, but not exactly "other people will want to read about this" interesting. Lucas may or may not have (definitely did) spent 24 hours in his pajamas the other day. Try not to judge. If my child did not love to cuddle and read books for much longer periods of time than could possibly be considered normal for a one-and-a-half year old boy, my "pain days" would be pretty much impossible.

But in happier news, I might have some exciting (mostly for me, I'm sure) blog news to share soon. And my husband is awesome. And this little boy's smile pretty much makes my life:

Stay tuned for further updates from my living room floor.

DIY Key wall art

Yesterday in my post about our home library, I promised a tutorial for the key wall-art-thingy I did. Since I'm quite certain that you've all been waiting on the edge of your seats and with bated breath (and any other idioms you can think of to describe "waiting impatiently,") here it is!

A few months ago, I found this awesome wood frame on clearance at Michael's for $3. (They no longer have this exact one, but they have similar ones if you want to make one of your very own. I think they're $8ish when they're not on clearance.)
I forgot to take a picture of it before I started painting. Also, there's a toy car. I have a toddler. Although actually he was napping while I was painting this, so I guess I can't explain the presence of the car in this picture.
When I bought the frame, I immediately came up with an awesome idea for it, and then didn't do anything with it for at least three months. I'm pretty good at ideas; follow-through, not so much. I knew I wanted to paint it and hang it in the library with keys hanging from it, but I couldn't decide if I should paint it white (to match all of the furniture in the library) or red (for a bright pop of color in a room that is mostly blue and white.) So since I couldn't decide, I did nothing. Obviously. Then I was talking to my friend Teri about it (the same one who pretty much picked out the chairs for our library,) and she was like, "Oo, red!" So there you go. I wanted sheer white ribbon to hang the keys from, but I couldn't find any, so I had to go with non-sheer ribbon. I'm still on the lookout for thin sheer white ribbon, so if you have some, wanna share?? (Or at least tell me where you got it?)

I spent at least ten minutes agonizing over red paint colors at Michael's, and finally settled on this one:

Americana acrylic paint in Tuscan Red
I painted it with two coats, and I thought it looked kind of fabulous. The inside of the scroll work (or whatever you call it) is darker than the rest of the wood, so you don't need to worry about getting the red paint inside all of the edges of each hole, because it doesn't really show up. That makes it a lot easier and less time-consuming.

Again with the car...
I had three old keys (and two pretending-to-be-old keys that were actually new, also from Michael's) so I went to an antique store to find two more old keys, since seven keys just seemed like the right number for the size of the frame. When I had all of the keys, I laid the frame on the table and then spent a ridiculous amount of time arranging and rearranging the keys until I liked the way they looked. Then I cut the ribbon to the right length for each key, and attached each one to the back of the frame (right now they are attached with super-classy clear duct tape, just in case I find ribbon I like better and want to re-do it. Then I'll probably use some sort of glue. Maybe super glue? I'm not a glue expert.) I started by attaching the two outermost keys first and then did the one in the middle, then filled in the other four keys so they were spaced evenly. It seemed like a better idea than going from left to right, since I probably would've spaced them poorly and ended up without enough room for the last key. Then I hung it on a lonely wall in the library!
I'm not even going to lie: I'm not currently reading that book. The picture just looked better with a book on the table. The pillow and chair are from Ikea, and the wall paint color is Glass Sapphire by Behr. Also, the white spots on the wall aren't actually there in real life. My camera was just being a jerk.
So there you go. "Art!" Feel free to copy it. You don't even have to name a room in your house after me in exchange for the idea. You're welcome.

If you liked this, please click the smiling woman below! If you didn't like it, please click the smiling lady to make me feel better about you hating my idea. Because seriously, that's hurtful.

Our library!

We bought our first house in July of last year. It's a newer house and was in great condition, but like pretty much everyone who ever buys a house, we had a million ideas for things we would change after we moved in... most of which will probably never actually get done.

One of the first rooms you see when you walk into our house is a room that maybe was supposed to be a formal living room, but it's really small for a formal living room. Also, we're not really formal people, so we have no need for a room with the word "formal" in front of it. The people we bought the house from used the room as a music room:
Music room/Formal living room
A music room is a great idea if you actually have any musical instruments, but since we only have one guitar that neither of us really knows how to play, our music room would've been super lame. So I Googled "what to do with a formal living room" (Google knows everything), and everyone suggested making it a library, and I was like, "OH MY GOSH, DAN!! LET'S HAVE A LIBRARY!!!" Because reading is my favorite thing ever. (Let's ignore the fact that although reading is my favorite thing ever, I was apparently unable to come up with the concept of a library on my own.)

Anyway, the library has been a year-long project, and it could still use some more stuff on the walls, but it's totally my favorite room in our house, so I had to share.

You can click on all of these pictures to see them larger. Just so you know...
We got the bookshelves soon after we moved in. My dad helped me assemble them, and my mom helped apply wallpaper (that I spent weeks hunting for) onto the backs of the shelves. And then it came off after the wallpaper paste dried. (Apparently you can't use wallpaper paste on whatever that cardboard stuff is that they put on the backs of shelves. Just FYI.) I reattached it with scrapbooking glue dots because I was fed up and just wanted the project to be over. But once the backs were hammered onto the shelves, the wallpaper couldn't go anywhere.

Then for a year, we had shelves and books in the room and nothing else, because it turns out that I'm very indecisive when it comes to chairs. Dan even gave me a home-made gift certificate for chairs for Mother's Day (which was hilariously worded and the sweetest thing ever) and I still couldn't figure out what chairs I wanted. Then I was talking to my friend Teri, and she was like, "Oh, I just assumed you'd get big, comfy white chairs with blue pillows." And of course, that was exactly what the room needed. So if you need decorating advice, ask Teri. Unless you don't know her. In that case, I guess you're just out of luck.

We found the chairs at Ikea (and the story of the two trips we took to get them could be a blog post in itself), and while white might seem like a stupid color for a house with a toddler boy, the covers are removable and machine washable.

I still need something on the wall above the chair by the window and something else to the left of the bookshelves (so if you have ideas, please share!) but my current decorations include a key wall hanging/picture frame that I made yesterday and am ridiculously proud of:

I'll make a tutorial of how I made it soon (even though it was embarrassingly easy,)
but this post is already getting too long.
A framed quote that says "Children are made readers on the laps of their parents." that is hanging above a basket of Lucas's books (I bought it here on etsy):

I feel like this needs something else hanging under it. Either that or a short bookshelf. Any suggestions?
And some framed pictures of Lucas reading:
Also, various other random items that I don't feel like listing.
So that's my library! Like I said, the walls need some more oomph, but it's taken over a year just to get it to this point, so I can't really count on it ever being a whole lot better than this. Unless, of course some of you recommend awesome things for me to hang on my walls! So... get busy!
